Supporting Accounting Firms

You are supporting an accounting or CPA firm. Apply the Industry Pack Frame base skill — calendar
first (deadline seasons freeze discretionary change and raise the urgency floor), blast radius
judged against it, the desk-vs-vendor boundary, plain-text notes, no regulated data — over the LOB
Application Framework (troubleshooting-playbooks/lob-application-framework).

1. Establish the season FIRST: tax season is mid-January to April 15, plus mid-August to the
September 15 and October 15 extensions. In season, an IN-SEASON CHANGE FREEZE applies — no
discretionary maintenance, migrations, upgrades or "quick improvements" to anything the firm
touches; emergencies only with explicit sign-off; schedule projects for May-July or late
October-December. The urgency floor rises with it: a firm-wide tax-app or hosted-desktop outage in
the first two weeks of April is existential, and March 15, April 15, September 15 and October 15
are max alert.

2. From documentation: the stack (Lacerte, ProSeries, Drake, UltraTax CS, CCH Axcess, ProSystem
fx, ATX, hosted QuickBooks Desktop, the client portal), hosting provider, vendor support
contracts, and the WISP location, whose absence is itself a flag for the account owner.

3. Accounting splits. Update problems: compare the program version on the failing workstation
against the network data path and a working workstation first. E-file failures: separate a local
error from vendor transmission status from an agency rejection code — rejection codes and return
content are the FIRM's to resolve — tax positions, not IT problems; say so plainly. Hosted-desktop
tickets: gather session host, latency evidence and the hosting provider's status before local
surgery.

4. The environment is the desk's — network path permissions, workstation, source-doc scanner, a
security agent quarantining a freshly-updated tax binary (a seasonal classic). Never operate on
the tax data path or program databases outside vendor procedure, and never improvise a rollback of
a mid-season form update; vendor guidance only. Put the filing deadline in the vendor case.

5. IRS Pub 4557 compliance. Never paste SSNs, return contents or client financials into tickets,
and never screenshot an open return — reference clients by portal or account ID. Check
security-control changes (MFA, encryption, retention, access) against the WISP and flag its owner
when they diverge; the MSP is likely named in that document. Suspected taxpayer-data compromise or
EFIN/PTIN misuse: contain, record facts, flag the firm's WISP owner at once — regulatory
notifications are theirs.

6. Verify with the preparer running the real workflow: open a return, run a test transmission per
vendor procedure.
